Clickair brand axed in Vueling merger

The Clickair brand will be dropped in July as a result of the Spanish no-frills airline's merger with rival carrier Vueling Airlines.

Iberia-backed Clickair flies between Heathrow and four Spanish destinations: Vigo, La Coruna, Seville and Bilbao.

Its name and website will be scrapped in mid-July, said Clickair chief executive Alex Cruz, who will head the merged airline, which will take Vueling’s name.

But Cruz said Vueling was committed to maintaining the UK routes, even though load factors were lower than the carrier hoped for, as the aircraft were operating at less than 72% full.

Cruz accepted Vueling was not a well-known brand in the UK, but said it had a high profile in Spain, particularly around its Barcelona base, and would concentrate initially on traffic originating in Spain.

Iberia
will own 45% of the merged airline, which will operate 35 aircraft. About 300 jobs are expected to be lost as a result of the merger.

The new airline will code-share with Iberia on the majority of routes.
