London City airportLondon City Airport has been given the green light to increase flights by 50% by the end of 2010 – a move welcomed by the business travel community.

The London Borough of Newham, where the airport is located just two miles from the Olympic site, has agreed to allow London City to operate up to 120,000 flights a year, up from 80,000.

Airport bosses predict the increase will boost passenger numbers from 3.3 million to 3.9 million per year.

Maurice Veronique, chairman of the Guild of Travel Management Companies, said it was good for both the business and leisure travel sectors.

“It’s a sensible decision taken in the run-up to the Olympics," he said.

"We are all expecting the games to stimulate the economy both in London and across the UK, so the flights are necessary and welcomed.”

Veronique, who is also joint chief executive of Travel by Appointment, said the increase in capacity at London City was good news as it would take some pressure off Heathrow.

London City Airport, which was designed primarily to serve business travellers, has 10 airlines serving more than 30 destinations in the UK and Europe.
