FTO's Travelife scheme gains 100 auditors
Tuesday, September 08, 2009 Independent health and safety expert, Check Safety First, is supporting the FTO’s Travelife scheme by training over 100 of its auditors to carry out the programme. Once fully trained, the company will be able to go into hotels around the world to inspect their environmental and ethical sustainability initiatives. Travelife is an initiative created by the FTO, and part-funded by the EU, to support an efficient and cost-effective introduction of sustainability principles within the travel industry. The two main aspects of the initiative are environmental (energy consumption, water management, waste disposal and recycling) and ethical (labour relations, CSR, staff morale and contributions to the local community). Check Safety First already works with more than 1,500 hotels in 24 countries, so this collaboration will provide the Travelife scheme with the opportunity for growth across several territories. Jason Burnett, technical director at Check Safety First, said: “Green and ethical travel is slowly climbing higher and higher up the consumers’ list of holiday requirements and hotels are becoming increasingly aware of this. “Initiatives such as Travelife provide hoteliers with an outlet to demonstrate their commitment to sustainable travel, while enabling travellers to opt for a greener holiday by simply looking out for the Travelife award symbol in brochures. “This is a great opportunity that will benefit everyone involved within the industry – travel agents, operators, consultants, hoteliers and, of course, the holidaymakers themselves.” • Sunvil joins Travelife hotel-vetting scheme (7 Aug 2009) • Co-op teams up with Travelife (30 Jun 2009) • Tui adds hotelier 'green clause' (7 May 2009)
