Bmibaby plans expansion at East Midlands

Bmibaby is planning to increase its capacity at East Midlands airport by 40% by basing more aircraft there, adding routes and increasing frequencies.

The airline’s plans for East Midlands come a week after easyJet said it was quitting the airport completely because it did not believe it offered long-term growth potential.

Bmibaby will base three extra aircraft at East Midlands and launch eight routes, to Alghero (Sardinia), Barcelona, Bastia (Corsica), Cork, Dubrovnik (Croatia), Malta, Newquay and Venice.

It will also increase frequencies on key winter and summer routes, add Palma to its winter flying programme, and a run a year-round service to Geneva and Prague.

The airline said the expansion would bring another 350,000 passengers and 2,872 flights to the airport next year. Flights go on sale today.

Bmibaby managing director Crawford Rix said: “We continue to be a champion of the consumer market: currently we are offering no credit and debit card fees on all flights, and skis and snowboards fly free of charge on bookings to any of our ski destinations.

“Plus, all passengers travelling with us are allocated a seat, so there is no need to dash for a seat.

“We recognise the size of the East Midlands market and its future potential, and we will continue to offer the people of the East Midlands low-cost flights with a high-quality service.”

Penny Coates, managing director of East Midlands airport, said: “The BMI group have served the East Midlands region for 45 years; they are a local, long-term operator that is committed to the growth of the East Midlands region.”

It is all too easy for the travel trade fraternity to condemn no frills airline industry leaders easyJet and Ryanair as "anti"-trade, and to welcome the bmibaby's expansion plans at EMA as being supposedly "pro"-trade. This however conveniently overlooks that bmibaby - unlike easyJet and Ryanair - has yet to make a profit. This, as well as the uncertainty surrounding the future of the entire bmi group poses the question as to how sustainable bmibaby's growth plans at EMA really are, especially in the current economic environment. The bmi group's recent poor financial track record and the fact that it cannot match easyJet's or Ryanair's costs and scale make it a forgone conclusion that there is no future for it in its present shape. This in itself is ample proof that easyJet and Ryanair must be doing something right, whether the travel trade likes it or not.
