Tui Travel cancels Dreamliner orders

Tui Travel has cancelled 10 of its Boeing 787 Dreamliners on order from Boeing and put back delivery to early 2012.

It is not now expecting to receive its first Dreamliner until three years after the original delivery date of spring this year.

Production delays
at Boeing’s Seattle factory meant the delivery date had slipped to winter 2010 until Tui’s latest announcement about the cancellations put it back further.

Tui said it decided to cancel 10 of its 23 Dreamliners on order after “extensive discussions” with Boeing.

But it said it still believed the Dreamliner was the ideal aircraft for Tui’s long-haul flying because it would be able to fly longer distances than equivalent aircraft today with greater fuel efficiency and passenger comfort.

“We are disappointed by the delay but we remain committed to the Dreamliner programme, which will deliver a next generation aircraft offering fantastic benefits to our customers,” said a spokeswoman.

She said Tui was still expecting to be the first to fly Dreamliners in the UK. However, British Airways deliveries are also scheduled for 2012, although that date could slip.

Monarch
and Virgin Atlantic are not expecting delivery of their aircraft until 2013.

Tui added that it had agreed with Boeing purchase rights, with no obligation, for 13 Dreamliners to “optimise flexibility” around long-haul capacity.
