Cabin crew union takes BA fight to court

Cabin crew union Unite will this week seek a court injunction to stop British Airways going ahead with plans to change working practices.

The High Court hearing is set for this Thursday and in the meantime the union is pressing on with its ballot of members of strike action.

It is a holding a mass meeting at Sandown racecourse today where officials will report to members why talks have stalled and outline the ballot process.

The row centres on BA’s plans to reduce the number of cabin crew by one person on many long-haul flights and introduce different contracts for new employees. The changes are due to come in from November 16.

The legal move and start of the ballot process comes as BA prepares to announce half-year results on Friday, which are expected to show a £252 million loss compared with a £52m profit the year before.

If Unite members vote for a strike in the ballot, it could lead to BA aircraft being grounded in the busy pre-Christmas period.

Media coverage of this dispute has centred on the conditions of service, pay and perks of BA cabin crew. These reports are strong on claim and counter-claim, but weak on facts and figures. Perhaps a member of BA cabin crew could enlighten TTG readers with the missing details?
