Abta seeks views on package rules

The first of three crucial investigations into the future of consumer protection started yesterday when the EU launched a consultation on reform of the Package Travel Directive.

That consultation follows EU consumer affairs commissioner Meglena Kuneva’s assertion that the law is out of date.

It will be followed by the Department for Transport’s reform of the UK’s Atol system, which is due to start in December.

And a third consultation, by the EC on how passengers can be protected from airline failure, originally scheduled to start this week, will begin in January.

Abta chief executive Mark Tanzer said the association would make it as easy as possible for members to take part.

“The next few months will be critical for the travel industry to submit their thoughts on all the issues covered by these consultations,” he said.
