EasyJet calls for new eco-aircraft law

EasyJet has called for global standards for new aircraft that it claims could lead to a 40% cut in aviation’s carbon emissions.

Chief executive Andy Harrison said setting environmental standards for new aircraft would have a much bigger impact that taxing the industry.

“Step change technology is in the pipeline, and we need tough legislation on emission standards for it to be delivered sooner,” he said.

“Wartime has led to the biggest leaps in aviation technology. Governments must ensure that the war on climate change delivers the next big leap in technology.

“We demand legislation for cleaner aircraft to stop the industry flying old, inefficient aircraft.”

Harrison said tough emissions standards at the manufacturing stage would deliver global environmental benefits as most aircraft were made in Europe or the US before being exported to growing markets in China and India

Aircraft were already built to minimum standards for noise and another standard for emissions could be introduced in three stages: By 2015, every new aircraft type would have to meet the standard, by 2024, airlines would not be able to add to their fleet any aircraft not meeting the standard, and by 2030 airlines could not operate aircraft that did not meet the standard.

EasyJet’s proposal is for the new standards should be established by the International Civil Aviation Organisation and apply to all developed countries.
