BA strike talks: tomorrow is NOT deadline

Monday, March 08, 2010

Sources close to the talks between British Airways and its cabin crew have dismissed reports that the two sides are working towards a deadline tomorrow.

Both BA and Unite have said they would like to settle the dispute by the end of Tuesday, but a source said this did not mean that strikes would be announced tomorrow or that a settlement had to be reached then.

The two sides will continue meeting today and tomorrow in an effort to get agreement, but discussions may continue after tomorrow’s hypothetical deadline.

If cabin crew do decide to call a strike tomorrow, the earliest it can take place is March 16, but unions have already said they will not target Easter.

“Talks are continuing,” said a BA spokeswoman.

I am scheduled to fly to Hong Kong on 16th of March and this whole affair is awful - it's like waiting on tenderhooks to hear and snippet of news. Do you think it's likely, if talks breakdown/end on Tuesday then Unite would announce strikes on the same day (if they do then the first day of the strike will be 16th - my departure date).
