Taiwan’s China Airlines will launch the UK’s first non-stop service to Taipei on March 28.
Three flights a week will operate to the Taiwanese capital from Heathrow, competing with EVA Air, the Chinese island’s other carrier, which flies daily to Taipei via Bangkok.
The launch of the flights from London follows a thawing in relations between Beijing and Taiwan which last year saw the resumption of flights between the tropical island and the mainland.
China Airlines offers connections from Taipei, including Bali and Sydney. However, the flights will mainly attract the ex-pat community plus business travellers, as Taiwan has a large manufacturing industry, particularly for hi-tech goods.
China Airlines will operate an Airbus A340-300 aircraft with 30 seats in business class and 246 in economy. Return fares from London to Taipei start at £370.
