Oasis appoints seven godmothers

The world’s largest cruise liner will break with maritime tradition by having seven "godmothers" to protect it on the high seas.

Liners usually have a godmother – a figurehead to symbolise the ship – but the
Oasis of the Seas is so massive it will have seven to represent the seven zones on board.

Royal Caribbean International will officially name the liner in Florida on November 30 and the seven women will officially name the ship in an onboard ceremony.

The godmothers include singer Gloria Estafan, the Cosby Show’s Keshia Knight Pulliam and Emmy and Golden Globe winning actor Jane Seymour

Olympic medal-winning skater Michelle Kwan, gymnast Shawn Johnson, swimmer Dara Torres and TV beauty and fitness expert Daisy Fuentes make up the team.

Royal Caribbean Cruises chief executive Richard Fain said: “It is a humbling and equally exciting privilege to have these seven exemplary women take on the responsibility of being godmothers of Oasis of the Seas.”

The seven will each represent one of the ship’s new "neighbourhoods": Central Park, Boardwalk, the Royal Promenade, the Pool and Sports Zone, Vitality at Sea Spa and Fitness Center, Entertainment Place and Youth Zone.

The ship has 16 decks and can accommodate 5,400 passengers.
