WTM 2009: Air Europa reports profit

Spanish airline Air Europa is set to buck the downward trend in the aviation sector by announcing that it made a profit in the last 12 months.

The Majorca-based carrier, which flies twice-daily between Gatwick and Madrid Barajas, told TTG the past year had been a success and that figures should be released in the next four weeks.

Colin Stewart, Air Europa’s general manager in the UK, said the company was looking to build both its leisure and business travel offering through the trade.

“I can’t release figures at the moment but we are in the unique position of having made a profit in the last 12 months. That said, 2010 will be challenging and we are looking to step up efforts with the trade in order to establish ourselves as the Latin American specialist scheduled carrier out of Gatwick.”

Air Europa, which currently pays agents 5% commission on bookings, flies from Gatwick via Madrid to Buenos Aires, Caracas, Cancun, Punta Cana and Santa Domingo.

Stewart said Air Europa was also reintroducing its Madrid – Salvador de Bahia route for the winter season. He said there had been overwhelming demand for the route to be brought back and that it may, if successful, continue into next summer.

“Just because we’ve had a good year does not mean we can sit back. We will continue to offer promotions and incentives in 2010. Our training will also be ramped up as we aim to get a very important message across to agents and customer: we are a full-service carrier and pride ourselves on giving added value.”

Air Europa already works with HRG, Portman Travel, Reed and Mackay and the Advantage Focus Partnership. Stewart said Air Europa would be increasing its footprint in the business travel arena in 2010.
