Edward Enfield, veteran journalist and father of comedian Harry, today praised the New Acropolis Museum in Athens and called for the Parthenon Marbles in the British Museum to be returned to Greece.
Enfield visited the museum earlier this month.
He believes the new museum will be a major tourist attraction, and the museum directors expect it to draw in two million visitors annually.
The museum, which opens early next year, will house artifacts from the entirety of the Acropolis' history, including many from the 5th century BC Parthenon.
Space has been reserved in the museum for the relics currently held by the British Museum, which were described by Enfield as part of Greece's greatest artistic legacy.
The British Museum Act 1963 prevents the museum from giving up any important pieces and Parliament would have to act before the artifacts could be returned. Nevertheless, Enfield was optimistic the Parthenon Marbles could be returned soon.
