Two Cook reps WILL go on trial in Corfu

The trial of two Thomas Cook reps over the death of two children in Corfu in 2006 is due to begin on June 25.

Nicola Gibson and Richard Carson face trial for negligence, along with hotel staff, following the deaths of Bobby Shepherd, 6, and his sister Christi, 7, from gas poisoning at the Louis Corcyra Beach Hotel.

They are facing trial following an unexpected decision by Greek authorities to overturn an earlier recommendation. If found guilty, they could be jailed for up to 20 years.

The decision was met with anger by former colleagues. A year ago they set up a Facebook support group, which now has 1,000 members.

FTO director-general Andy Cooper described the decision as “perverse, unusual and radical”.

And a Thomas Cook spokesman said the company was “shocked and deeply concerned” at the decision to prosecute.

Up until last week I was an Overseas Rep with T Cook, I also worked with Richard in the Dom Rep, and I am also a mother of a toddler. My heart aches for any parent who has suffered a loss of a child, and whilst we all look for someone/something to blame in order that we can maybe come to terms with things a little more. We must be realistic and understand that these two employees are not to blame. I consider myself to be and have been told by many other TC members of staff that I am over the top and cross every I and dot every T in my job - that is because for me I am very aware of the importance, the day I met Richard carson and realised how he worked I was so glad he was in resort - he was way past me, he is a credit to his title, his family and to anyone that has had the pleasure of knowing him. It is such a shame in life that for someone who is so thorough and cautious in everything they do should be blamed for this tragic incident. My heart goes out also to the Rep who lets face it is hardy an engineer - nor does she need to be in her job role. May god bless them both and carry them through this ordeal, may justice not blame shifting be served, may the 2 children rest in peace and their parents/relatives find some closure with the help of the good lord above.
