New Mexico has launched an advertising campaign in conjunction with M&C Saatchi LA, selling itself as “The Best Place In The Universe”.

In a number of print and television adverts, the state shows various famous aliens (as well as humans) enjoying themselves in its tourist attractions. Stan Winston, the designer for Aliens, Predator, Jurassic Park and Terminator, designed the alien costumes.

The tourist board said that the gimmick was supposed to show how unique and exciting New Mexico is – so much so that it had started to attract tourists from other worlds.

Johnny Montoya, tourism department advertising director, said: “The message is that New Mexico truly is the best place in the universe to visit. These adverts will be unique and eye-catching; and they will increase the awareness of New Mexico as a vacation destination.”

Michael Cerletti, secretary of the New Mexico tourism department, added: "We needed a highly creative campaign to cut through the clutter of tourism advertising and encourage folks to consider the uniqueness of New Mexico."
