Dubai Metro monorail opens
Tuesday, September 08, 2009 A monorail network will open tomorrow in Dubai. The Dubai Metro is to be operated by Serco, the company behind London’s Docklands Light Railway and the Copenhagen underground system in Denmark. The network is thought to be the longest automatic driverless rail transport system in the world. It is the first such system in the United Arab Emirates. It is predicted the trains will carry an average of 600,000 passengers a day this year, and to grow to 1.8 million a day by 2020. The red line, which opens tomorrow, will connect key locations across the city, including Dubai international airport, the Burj Dubai, the Burj Al Arab, Emirates Towers and Dubai Marina. The 52km route from Rashidiya to Jebel Ali will take 69 minutes and feature 29 stations with 62 five-carriage trains. The green line is expected to open in March. It will be a 23km, 18-station line passing through the central business district.
