GLOSSARY You already know this, but just in case…
Ancillaries: income additional to the basic price, covering everything from credit-card charges and baggage fees to inflight meals and scratch-card sales.
Broker: an intermediary that uses aggregated buying power either direct from the public or through agents to extract extremely favourable discounts from renters, big and small, and deliver lower rates than individual customers can achieve. Capping: setting a limit on mileage, beyond which you pay a price per mile - typically 10 or 20p. It's a useful way for vehicle owners to limit depreciation. But increasingly, competition is forcing owners to offer unlimited mileage. Drop-off fee: something of a silly term, because car rental customarily ends with a drop off. What it means is dropping off the car somewhere other than where you rented it. Franchisee: an independent business that buys and sells its own cars but adopts the policies and brand of a multinational.
Load factor: the percentage of seats on an aircraft that are filled. If all but 19 of the seats on a Ryanair aircraft (capacity 189) are filled, then the load factor is within a whisker of 90 per cent.
Marginal cost: the additional cost involved in carrying an extra passenger. These include taxes and fees, such as Air Passenger Duty and the airport's Passenger Service Charge, as well as the extra costs associated with baggage handling - and a tiny amount of extra fuel.
Yield: the fare that accrues to the airline - usually stripped of Air Passenger Duty and other government charges. yield management: adjusting fare levels according to demand in order to fill the highest possible number of seats at the best possible fares. |
